Curbside pile of demolished red stained deck lumber and framing beside a chain link fence

Project

Demolished deck lumber at the curb

What a deck looks like once it is off the joists. Red stained boards, framing and posts stacked on the curb strip, waiting on the trailer.

The job

This is the part people underestimate

A deck does not look like much until it is in a pile. Then it is a few hundred board feet of stained lumber, joists, rim boards, posts and whatever the posts were bolted to, and every piece of it has fasteners sticking out.

Plenty of homeowners tear the boards off themselves over a weekend and stop right here. The demolition is the easy half. The pile is the half that sits by the fence for a month, because it will not fit in a truck bed, the city will not take it at the curb, and dragging nail studded lumber across the yard is how somebody ends up at urgent care.

If your deck is already down and stacked, that is a haul, not a demolition. Say that on the call. It is a different job.

Deck debris

What goes and what stays

Boards, joists, beams and rails

Everything wood goes on the trailer, fasteners and all.

Posts and footings

Posts pull. Concrete footings have to be dug out, and that leaves holes. Ask for them to come out if you are pouring a slab or laying pavers over the spot, and leave them if the new structure is going in the same footprint.

Hardware and flashing

Joist hangers, ledger bolts and the flashing against the house. The ledger is the piece that matters, because whatever is behind it is what the next builder inherits.
